ABOUT

The Communicating Science Workshop for Graduate Students

ComSciCon is a series of workshops focused on the communication of complex and technical concepts organized by graduate students, for graduate students.  ComSciCon attendees meet and interact with professional communicators, build lasting networks with graduate students in all fields of science and engineering from around the country, and write and publish original works.

Founded in 2013 by graduate students at Harvard University and MIT, over 500 graduate students nationwide have already participated in ComSciCon programs, including our annual National Workshops and Local Workshops which have been started by ComSciCon alumni across the country. Attendees have founded new science communication organizations in collaboration with other students at the event, published over 80 articles written at the conference in popular publications with national impact, and formed lasting networks with our student alumni and invited experts.

Acceptance to the workshop is competitive and attendance is free.

Dr. Sharp is an engineer, writer, and science communicator specializing in fluid dynamics. As a PhD student, she created the popular fluid dynamics blog FYFD, which she now runs full-time. In 2014, she completed her PhD in aerospace engineering at Texas A&M University studying the effects of surface roughness on hypersonic aerodynamics. She earned her Master’s degree from Cornell University studying subsonic turbulence and completed my undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University, also in aerospace engineering.

Georgia Tech’s Engineered Biosystems Building provides 218,880 square feet of flexible interdisciplinary laboratory space for researchers collaborating in the fields of Chemical Biology, Cell Therapies and Systems Biology. A principle goal of the design is to foster interaction between chemists, engineers, biologists and computational scientists from two separate colleges: the College of Engineering and the College of Science. The building is developed with a highly utilized equipment corridor securely linking vertical circulation to every lab and support space while allowing wide transparency into research labs.

Parking passes for the lot adjacent to EBB will be provided to any attendees that need it. Emory students are encouraged to take the Emory-Georgia Tech shuttle.

Apply

ComSciCon-Atlanta is intended to serve graduate students throughout the southeast- we anticipate that application will be competitive. With that in mind, please prepare your applications thoughtfully!

For each response, you may write no more than 500 characters (includes spaces). This is approximately 100 words.

Applications will be evaluated on responses to the following prompts (you must answer all prompts).

Question 1: Describe your previous experience in science communication.

Describe one or more science communication efforts you've been involved in. These could include participation or leadership in student organizations, contributions to science outreach programs, blogging or other writing for the general public, activity on social media, or other experiences. Try to focus on anything you've done outside of your regular duties as a graduate student. â€‹

Question 2: How would you describe your research to the general public?

Imagine you are asked about your research by a neighbor with no experience in your field. How would you describe the work that you do in an accurate, but exciting and engaging way?

Question 3: Why do you want to attend the ComSciCon-local workshop?

How would attending help or influence your studies and your future career? â€‹

The application contains other questions on demographics that will not be used to evaluate your application.

Before you apply, please note the following:

  1. Priority will be given to attendees that can attend both days of the workshop.

  2. To secure your spot, you must mail us a $50 check. The check will be returned to you after the workshop provided you have completed the requirements:

    1. Requirement #1: Completion of a brief pre and post event survey.

    2. Requirement #2: Participation in the Write-A-Thon (more info about that here).

    3. Requirement #3: Attendance for the entirety of the workshop.
